Park Life

There are few better family activities than a hike and a picnic. Here’s how to pull it off with the minimum of fuss..

By Amy Gubner

Fall FamilyBefore the weather turns too chilly, take the time to get outside and enjoy some QT with the family—take a hike, or a nature walk in the woods and, at the end, whip out a blanket and your picnic cooler. It’s a fabulous way to connect with your family and with nature.

Choose the Trail

In the National Parks, and most state parks, too, trail maps usually tell you a route’s length, level of difficulty and the interesting points along the way, like picnic areas. Many of the maps can be found online.

“Start with something small to avoid possible meltdowns and don’t forget that terrain can add time to your trip,” cautions Chris Stiehl of Teton Valley Search and Rescue. He adds that, because hikes often take longer than expected, it’s a good idea to pack a flashlight.

What to Wear

Layering is the key. As you move, you’ll warm up and need to shed clothes. When you stop, you’ll quickly cool down and want to put them back on. Base layers should be made from synthetic fabrics that wick moisture away from your body. “Cotton has to go,” says Stiehl. “As the weather gets more unpredictable, it’s just silly, especially as a base.” Then layer on some insulation—fleece and/or down. Last comes your wind or waterproof layer, if necessary.

Another key item is stabilizing footwear. For the average hiker, a lightweight, low-cut hiking shoe will do the trick. If you’re prone to twisting your ankle, a higher-cut shoe will come in handy on more uneven terrain. And while not, strictly speaking, an item of clothing, several members of your party should strap on CamelBaks. Dehydration can wreck your day!

What to Eat

Snacks along the way will help keep everyone happy, but when you’re finished, you’ll be famished, but won’t necessarily want heavy food. Pack classic picnic food—potato salad, fruit salad, and sandwiches on crusty rolls—or peruse FoodNetwork.com for their picnic picks, like ratatouille with feta, green olives and almonds—yum! Pack it all in a cooler, not a basket, to keep it fresh. And don’t forget plenty of beverages. Spend your meal sharing favorite things you saw -- and planning your next outing!
