To keep breakouts at bay, it’s important to start with good habits...

By Maia Wagle

skin careAdult acne is surfacing at an unprecedented rate, and can be just as annoying as it was in adolescence. Most of us have suffered the occasional flare-up. And blemishes at any age can be infuriating!

What happens is a follicle or sebaceous gland becomes blocked—that’s how a breakout starts. A solid skin care regimen is one way to alleviate the symptoms, and prevent them. Gently cleansing and moisturizing your face twice a day, can really help.

There are two common questions that arise around this point.

Why is a daily moisturizer important?

Keeping your skin hydrated, keeps the surface supple. Your sebaceous glands tend to over-produce sebum when it is lacking. And when the surface of your skin becomes dehydrated, the build-up of dry cells can clog your pores. If you have oily skin, using a light or oil-controlling moisturizer can actually help regulate your natural oil production.

Why do I need to wash my face even on days I don’t wear makeup?

Simple. Your body is producing oil all the time, and attracting grime, so it’s a harbor for good and bad bacteria, environmental exposures, and dead skin cells. By washing your face, you are producing a clean, balanced surface for your skin cells to do their job, and keep you in the clear.
