Denim is far more a fashion essential than the basic white tee or the little black dress. But with countless trends emerging, disappearing, and them reemerging, it’s hard to tell what’s worth investing in. Here are five styles that have stood the test of time.
1. The Skinny
It’s no surprise that the style with the most nicknames—stovepipe, cigarette—is the most versatile. Cropped skinnies, in particular, look effortless with every outfit, from a casual tank to a dressy top, from flip-flops to pumps.
2. The Boyfriend
Nothing beats the boyfriend jean. It’s comfortable and looks cool at the same time. Pick a pair that’s slightly distressed, with a few holes here and there. Then add a skinny belt and roll up the cuffs. Strappy heels add a feminine touch.
3. The Shorts
Jean shorts are a summer must-have. But which wash, cut, and color? That is the question. Cut-offs are best for the beach, and look best in faded hues, while high-rise styles are dressier, and most flattering in dark dyes. And please, for everyone’s sake, don’t go chopping the legs off your old jeans like you did in high school.
4. The Flare
You never thought you’d see the day that your Dazed and Confused wardrobe would be back in style. If you held onto those high-waist flares, good job; if not, go ahead and get a new pair. This classy style looks best when topped with a silky blouse. And the higher the heel, the better—you can even hide wedges under these jeans.
5. The Jacket
Jean jackets will never go out of style. Oversize ones can be layered over just about anything, while fitted ones can add a little edge to summer dresses. Roll up the sleeves for a casual look, but please don’t pop your collar.
