When summer is in full swing, you will likely be spending more time outside—soaking up the sun, splashing in the pool, and enjoying meals al fresco. So extend your spring cleaning outdoors, and turn a backyard overrun with birds and bees into a sanctuary under the stars for your family.
While most patios are outfitted with deck chairs and sun loungers, think big and bring in a sofa or sectional. Comfortable cushions in bright colors and patterns can make an outdoor daybed as inviting as your living-room couch. Teak and mahogany are naturally rot-resistant, but a waterproofing sealant will protect other types of wood. Sprawl out and catch some rays, or open an umbrella and read a book in the shade.

Entertaining is always more, well, entertaining, outdoors. And we’re not talking your typical summer barbecue. Host an elegant dinner party at an industrial metal table topped with tempered glass. Upgrade your plastic cups and paper plates to vibrantly hand-painted ceramic dishes, platters, and glasses that mimic the colors of flowers in your garden. Hang a strand of string lights or beaded lanterns from low tree branches to set the mood while you dine.

Plants are obvious decorations for an outdoor space. A row of planters—color-coordinated with your furniture cushions, of course—can be placed along an edge of your outdoor “room” to make it feel more like an enclosed space. To further anchor the space, roll out an all-weather rug, which can be cleaned with a quick spray from the garden hose. If you’re expecting guests, set out a few wicker poufs and chunky throws in case the temperature dips when the sun goes down.
With some colorful and durable additions, your back yard will become your favorite “room” in the house this summer.
