We've barely stepped foot into fall so it's hard to believe Oscar season is already upon us. But some of this year's most lauded, buzz-worthy films are getting ready to make their end-of-year debut; a few are already out. Here are a handful of films that industry insiders predict just may be in line for a Best Picture nomination.
"The Master"

Story is set in the 1950s and centers on an intellectual cult leader whose religion begins to spread across America -- with the help of the young man who becomes his right-hand man. Is this a portrait of L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology? You be the judge.
"Lincoln"
Director: Steven Spielberg
Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field
In theatres: Nov 9 (limited release), Nov 16 (wide release)
Based on Doris Kearns Goodwin's biography of Lincoln, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, the film portrays our 16th president during the last 4 months of his life and his fight to abolish slavery and end the Civil War. That “Lincoln” comes out during an election year adds extra oomph to its appeal.
"Les Miserables"
Director: Tom Hooper ("The King's Speech")
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried
In theatres: Christmas Day
Victor Hugo's story -- which has now become one of the world's longest running musicals -- tells the story of a French peasant and ex-prisoner struggling to redeem his past.
"Flight"
Director: Robert Zemeckis
Starring: Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle
In theatres: November 2
A drama/mystery about a pilot who saves hundreds of lives in a plane disaster -- and the subsequent investigation into the cause of his emergency landing.
"Moonrise Kingdom"
Director: Wes Anderson
Starring: Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand
In theatres: now
A romantic comedy/drama hybrid that tells the fantastical, romantic and adventurous tale of two pre-teens in 1960s Rhode Island.
