Seasons back, the hip hugging denim trend was so immensely popular that it met with a booty backlash. This summer, a new silhouette is here and it’s figure friendly, very different, and altogether chic. Welcome to the high-waisted, flared pant. Shown off on the runways of fashion giants like St. John, Chado Ralph Rucci and Balmain, “high waisted pants are great for both the tall and slender women, whether flat front or crazy pleats,” says Indie Style TV and personal stylist, Robert Ballew. “But the look is super on curvy women, too. The high waist accents the hip a bit more, giving you an hour glass figure, which the majority of women don’t have.”
Ballew suggests pairing the new pants look with “a knit top or blouse for textural and body skimming reasons,” he says. “I love a nice chunky heel or wedge with these, especially if you have a shorter build. A detailed gladiator sandal would be the ticket for taller frames who are not looking to add any more height.
The look is long and lean enough already, so wearers should avoid “matching tops to the fabric of the pant,” says Ballew. “This way you will create more interest, and look very sophisticated. Also avoid pairing your high waisted flares with overly blousy or baggy tops, as this can make you look a bit frumpy.”
