From Amy Winehouse-inspired winged out, black eyeliner to a more subtle, yet equally dramatic, black-lined lid, eyeliner feels fresh as ever this summer. A complement to an otherwise natural face, the look made its way to the runways of John Paul Gaultier and Dolce & Gabbana. Stylist and president of School of Style, Lauren Messiah sites celebrities like Lauren Conrad and Rihanna, who often make black liner a part of their everyday beauty routines.
“Many people are under the misconception that liquid liner is harder to apply than a pencil liner,” says Messiah. “However, for this particular, winged out look, liquid liner looks better and is easier to apply.” Messiah suggests gently swiping the liquid in a thin line all the way across the lid, with a slight wing that follows the curve of your outer lashes. “For a more dramatic look,” she adds, “gradually increase the thickness of the line. And, if you’re working with pencil, it’s best to close your eye and pull the lid taut before applying liner.”
Strikingly different than the smoky eye of seasons past, there’s not the same hard, fast rules about keeping the rest of the face neutral. “My favorite way to wear this look is to keep the entire lid clean, with the exception of the black liner, one swipe of mascara and a bold lip in red or berry. But, avoid wearing colorful eyeshadow as that would be way too intense."
