Ladies, listen up—the runway has spoken...

Posted February 2, 2012

Printed Dress“Well-apparell'd April on the heel/Of limping winter treads.” Seems Shakespeare understood more than simply human nature but, also, a stylish girl’s need to shirk the wooly sweater in favor of light prints, pretty pastels and Espadrilles. Gotta hand it to the Bard. The spring 2012 runways were colorful, intense and exciting. Here are the top fresh spring trends hot off the international runways:

Color-blocking: Deeply hued, bold swatches of solid, complementing color walked nearly all the catwalks, looking particularly contemporary in wrap dresses, handbags, shoes, and skirt/blouse combinations. Tip: Stick to two or three colors only or you’ll end up looking like you got dressed in the dark.

Prints and patterns: We’re talking full body length swirls of paisley, flowers, and geometric angles. Tip: Though the runways tended to style this from head to toe, for everyday wear, it’s perhaps best to pair one bold print with a solid black or white.

Tangerine: This spring, look for marmalade, apricot, auburn and every other shade of orange imaginable. It’s out there in dresses, accessories and cosmetics. Tip: Find the right shade of orange for your skin tone and you’re instantly chic in a single hue.

Sherbet: If loud prints and colors aren’t your choice, fear not. Ladylike pastel shades were ever abundant on the spring runways. Mint green dresses, sky blue skirts and sweet pink shorts with matching blazers look cool and effortless as the weather heats up. Tip: break up a shorts suit by wearing the blazer with a pair of jeans on the weekend.

Metallic: Nights get even hotter this summer with sparkling, mirrored-effect cigarette pants, bronze skirts or shoes and bags in copper, gold or silver. Tip: Save the green lame for night. Some glitz can go out in daylight. This can’t.

Neon: Since spring is about color, this one is sure to steal any spotlight. Good for day or night, bright pops or shocking blocking, look for chartreuse, hot pink and electric blue everywhere. Tip: moderation is key but we didn’t need to tell you that.
