Thanksgiving Dinner Attire

What to wear wherever you go…

Thanksgiving is a time to unwind with family and friends around a home-cooked smorgasbord. So after braving delayed flights and inclement weather to get there, you may be tempted to throw on a pair of sweats and call it a day. But tryptophan-induced sleepiness is no excuse for sloppiness, especially if this year’s festivities are taking place at the in-laws’or the boss’ home. Here’s how to look both comfortable and chic wherever you will be. You’ll thank us.

All Hail the Hostess

If you are hosting Thanksgiving dinner, then you’ll likely spend the day slaving away in the kitchen in your PJs, then race into the bedroom to change when the doorbell rings. This doesn’t give you much time, so set out an elbow-sleeved shirt dress, a crisp shift dress or elastic-waisted shirred shift and a pair of wedge booties the night before—both of which can be slipped into seamlessly. A knee-length number can hide behind an apron while preparing last-minute dishes, and a dark print—preferably an autumnal pattern—will conceal any cooking or serving spills.

In Style at the In-Laws

Thanksgiving at the in-laws calls for an outfit that can go the distance, from lending a helping hand in the kitchen to corralling the kids to the table. And if one item of clothing has proven its durability—and more recently, fashionability—it’s overalls. The jumpsuit trend has shown no signs of slowing down, no doubt because of the inherent ease that a one-piece provides. In a slim-fit black or monochromatic style, with a silk blouse tucked in underneath, you won’t be mistaken for a farmer. And pointed-toe flats finish the look with a feminine touch.

After Hours

If you must work and play this Thanksgiving—in other words, the holiday is happening at your boss’ or a co-worker’s place—then think of it as just another casual Friday. You should exude sophistication, but not uptight stuffiness. The perfect pairing is a knitted cardigan or sweater—layered over a button-down if it’s chilly—and tapered trousers. It’s a luxuriously comfortable outfit, yet one that still shows the head honcho that you’re dressed to impress. But it is a holiday, after all, so add a printed silk scarf or a statement necklace to remind everyone you’re off duty.

You’re welcome.
