Fall is the favorite season for many of us for one main reason…it’s sweater weather! While you may long for drawers full of cozy, soft sweaters, knowing which styles make you look sleek and stylish and which make you look like Frosty the Snowman, can be confusing. Read on for the best sweaters of the season to compliment your body type.

Triangle

Often referred to as the pear, your bottom half is bigger than your top half. Your goal is to balance your two halves by adding “weight” and dimension up top. Styles to try include turtlenecks, crew necks, boat necks, and tunic sweaters in bright colors. More than any other body type, bulky, textured or embellished sweaters flatter you to no end.

Inverted Triangle

You’re the opposite of the triangle, with your upper body measuring greater than your bottom half. The ever-flattering V-neck sweater is your bestie. Other styles to flatter your top half include low bulk cardigans in traditional and maxi lengths; tunics with pockets or extra draping at the bottom. Instead of a poncho, opt for a sweater knit cape that’s open in front.

Oval

Often known as an apple, you carry your weight through your tummy and have slim limbs. It’s important to find sweaters that float over your mid-section without being vastly oversized. One of fall’s newest trends is your BFF…the poncho! Other trends to try include sleeveless cowl neck tunics and slim maxi cardigans.

Rectangle

Yep, just as the geometric shape suggests, you’re pretty straight up and down without much waist definition. Create the illusion of an hourglass figure by wearing your cropped cardigans buttoned (only) over your flat tummy closed to instantly create a waist. Also try belting any cardigan. Ruched waisted and wrap cardigans also create curves.

Hourglass

The most important thing for you to remember is to always show your waist. Failing to do this will make you look larger than you are. Look for fitted sweaters as well as belted ones. (If you are short waisted, tie the belt in the back or wear it low on your hips.) To wear trendy, oversized cardigans, be sure they’re not overly voluminous and wear a fitted top underneath.

With all of the styles in the market place, be sure to try on a lot of sweaters, and fall in love with the figure flattering styles that will keep you warm all winter long!
