Step Up Your Cold Weather Beauty Game

How to save your skin this season…

Gone are the days of dewy skin and beach-y hair. Winter is here and planning to stay awhile. Which means it’s time to overhaul your beauty regimen—just as you would your wardrobe—if you want to avoid chapped lips, wind-burned cheeks, and static-charged locks. But fear not the forecast. These tips will keep you looking hot no matter how cold it gets.

While the first chill in the air is cause for celebration (sayonara, summer frizz!) winter’s wind gusts are a reality check. Not to mention, beanies cause the worst hat hair, ever. Adding moisture to your tresses will stop the static, so lightly mist on an atomizer when you step inside and remove your hat. If you don’t already use a leave-in conditioner, start now. Opt for a glycerin-based one, which will pull moisture from the air into your hair. And if your hair is on the drier side, skip the shampoo altogether. Last but not least, add oil into your routine. No doubt you’ve heard all about Argan oil, which has been dubbed “liquid gold.” That’s because it’s rich in vitamin E, omega 9, and other beneficial acids that prevent frizz and smooth strands in one fell swoop.

Lip Service

You probably use some form of lip balm year-round, but keep one on hand at all times during the winter. Your lips don’t have sweat glands, and therefore don’t produce oil. That means they are dependent on you for moisture. This season, skip the flavored varieties (they will encourage you to lick your lips and make them drier) and choose a balm with replenishing oils. That goes for your lipstick, too. Creamy, castor oil- or Shea butter-infused brands are your best bet.

Save Face

The redness that flushes your cheeks after exposure to the cold is anything but a rosy glow. To keep your cool, layer your skincare like your clothing. Start with a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid, which seals in moisture as soon as you step out of the shower. Next, switch out the lightweight moisturizer you used in the summer for a super-emollient one with anti-inflammatory antioxidants like green tea and licorice. And never forget your SPF; the sun can still cause damage even if it’s hiding behind clouds. If your skin is already irritated, smooth on a calming mask with soothing ingredients such as oatmeal and cucumber.

Body & Soul

Just because your arms and legs are swaddled in thermals doesn’t mean they don’t feel the effects of cold weather. Use a body scrub twice a week to keep flaky patches at bay, then follow with an exfoliating salicylic acid-based cream. And remember to go a shade lighter on the self-tanner.

Body Lotion

Now that you’re covered from head to toe, you can hit the streets or the slopes with supple skin and sleek locks.
