This season, designers not only sent retro-inspired dresses and bell-bottomed jumpsuits down the runway, but also coats. And lots of them. Perhaps they predicted that Punxsutawney Phil would see his shadow because the spring shows were all about outerwear. From belted to cropped to printed styles, we’ve got you covered (pun intended).
The Biker Jacket
Biker jackets are no longer reserved for the dark and dangerous. This season, designers recreated the edgy moto jacket in warmer colors and cropped cuts, such as cranberry red at Christopher Kane and hot pink at Moschino. Rochas went one step further with his elegant, belted, pure white version. Think you’re on trend because you already own a biker jacket? Think again. Rather than throwing it over anything and everything as you once did, consider your new biker jacket as an integral part of the actual outfit.

The Trench Coat
The trench coat is outerwear’s answer to the white button-down shirt. Both timeless and on trend, it stood out this season with a slew of new design elements. At Vince, trench coats were in candy-colored hues. At Jason Wu and Loewe, they were made of suede rather than the more traditional, waterproof gabardine. And at Prada, leather trenches featured intricate stitching and pastel lace cutouts. While the iconic silhouette has remained the same, the new styles are now as well suited to girly girls as mystery men.

The Army Anorak
The military theme was in full effect this season, and nowhere was it more evident than in the form of coats. Stella McCartney designed parachute silk suits with matching coats, Rag & Bone threw an oversized, khaki-colored coat over army-green trousers, and Rodarte feminized the canvas fisherman’s jackets with mesh pockets and pearly sequins. The key to pulling off such a tough, utilitarian topper is to wear something ultra girly underneath, like a fringed skirt or lacy slip.

With these new styles, you’ll hope that every spring soiree is “jacket required.”
