Slipping into a dress is an essential rite of spring. And while the colorful little numbers and styles that pranced down the spring runways might excite, they can also confuse. After all, most of us are mere mortals, not models. Here are our choices for how to pull off spring runway dress favorites even if you still eat carbs and aren’t six feet tall.
Slip Up:
The slip dress is all over the place for spring but how to wear it without looking like you’re trying too hard? Well, tone it down. Throw a printed button down over it or a slouchy cardigan to offset the bedroom feel and spaghetti strap effect. Wear flats to, again, take away that screen siren feel, and make your bag choice either crossbody or leather backpack.
Shirt Smarts:
The shirtdress is, perhaps, the most versatile blank canvas of dresses. Make it whatever you want: an office classic or a date night diva. Think about your belt choice. Many shirtdresses come with their own fabric, matching belts. Nah. Too boring. Replace it with something beaded or a chain. Even a thick ribbon tied into a bow will work. Also try layering the dress by leaving the top open to reveal a cute colored tank, or wearing the shirtdress like a long spring coat atop another skirt and tank.

Tanker Babe:
The tank dress is, by its nature, very casual. But, beyond the beach and boardwalk, it does have a life. Just give it a chance. For instance, try layering the tank dress under a chambray button down or a cardigan, treating the tank dress in much the same way you’d style a tank top. You can even add a puffier A-line skirt over it. For work, pair a teeny tank dress with a pair of heels and a blazer, perhaps adding another color tank underneath for a layered feel.

Play with dresses this spring. Not everything has to be worn in its traditional manner. You might find your inner stylist yet.
