Exercising and eating healthy are the first steps to slimming down, but if you want to look fit sooner than later, how you dress can make a big difference. Here, we’ve narrowed down (pun intended) the best style secrets to looking svelte.
Let’s start with the basics: Swap out your crew-necks and turtlenecks for V-neck tees and sweaters, which draw attention away from your chin area, creating the illusion of a slimmer neckline. If you can get away with untucking your top, always do so. Dress shirts with straight-point collars—as opposed to spreads or bands—have an elongating effect, as well. And top off the look with a two-buttoned suit jacket; one buttons are truncating, and three buttons are boxy.

Another way to elongate your torso is to wear low-rise trousers. Read: not drop-crotch, low-rise. Just be sure that the waistband is wide enough to evade the dreaded “muffin-top” effect. Speaking of which…pleated pants only add more material to your midriff. Flat-front pants, rather, show off thin waists while disguising not-so-thin ones.

Focus on dark colors. It’s universally known that dark hues are slenderizing. But you need not dress in “all black everything”; navy blues and charcoal greys will have the same result. That said, a single solid color from head to toe could look formidable—but not in a good way. Knitwear that features subtle, textured prints or patterns draws the eye to the finer details and away from the big picture. And it goes without saying that pinstripes and vertical lines are flattering for every man, guiding eyes up and down, instead of side to side.

Now just remember to thank everyone when they tell you how great you look.
