Keep your resolution to have more fun this year with this month’s best video games.
DMC: Devil May Cry (Capcom; Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)
Though it’s set in an alternate dimension where our pretty boy hero has swapped his long blonde locks for a shorter, darker cut, this third-person action game is still very much in the spirit of the other games in this series. A retelling of his origin story, this again has the demon hunter Dante using his sword, dual pistols, and penchant for gravity-defying acrobatics to fight off some of Hell’s surlier residents. Both the 360 and PS3 editions are $59.99 each at Gamestop.
Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (Namco Bandai; PlayStation 3)
A collaboration between Japan’s most iconic animation house, Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle) and the masterminds behind some of that country’s most engaging puzzle games, Level-5 (the Professor Layton series), this epic, intelligent, and beautiful role-playing game casts you as a young boy who must explore a parallel universe in hopes of finding his mom. Available from Gamestop for $59.99, the game not only brings Studio Ghibli-style visuals to life, but does so with a deep and engaging adventure.
Hitman HD Trilogy (Square-Enix; Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)
After a six year absence, last year’s Hitman: Absolution was a triumphant return for this sneaky action series. But if you missed the earlier games, this collection will bring you up to speed, as it includes the previous three installments — 2002’s Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, 2004’s Hitman: Contracts, and 2006’s Hitman Blood Money — redone with HD graphics. Now playable on both the 360 and PS3, Gamestop has both editions for $39.99 each.
