NYENew Years Eve. It's a holiday with an air of glamour, one that begs to be rung in amidst inviting surroundings. If you find yourself hosting a soiree at home this New Year’s Eve, check out these simple tips for transforming your space into a warm and twinkly winter wonderland.

Lights

The easiest way to make the biggest impact in a space is with lighting. Lighting not only sets a mood, but it can change the whole tenor of a space and even create the illusion of a much bigger room.

For an evening party, dim lighting is a must, and it’s best to have your illumination come from many different sources. Try placing lamps at different vertical levels with some low to the ground and others higher up. Small candles placed throughout the room -- such as tea lights inside clear glass or frosted holders -- add warmth and dimension. Large candles can be impactful when placed in holders on a table, mantle or even nestled inside a non-working fireplace to create a cozy flickering fire feel.

String lights are easy to use and can make any space look star-lit. Choose strings with tiny white bulbs and hang them around the perimeter of the room, or string them back and forth across the ceiling to create a canopy.

Green life

Cut flowers are another simple way to transform, brighten and bring life to a room. Try deep, warm colors for winter such as reds, oranges and purples. Rather than creating mixed bouquets, keep your arrangements simple and stick to one type, like calla lilies or tulips.

Large potted plants can have as much of an impact as a piece of furniture. Especially if you have an empty corner of a room or other awkward space to fill, a tall plant can be the perfect solution and can, quite literally, breathe some life into the area.

Textiles

Sofas look so much more inviting when a few decorative pillows or cushions are tossed on top. Avoid the temptation to be too matchy-matchy; embrace a mix of colors and textures to add depth and richness to your space.
