As we approach fall, beauty trends are looking dark and vampy, or nude and natural. But it’s never a mistake to play up your eyes. There’s no better way to do this than with artfully applied false eyelashes. We spoke with Los Angeles based professional makeup artist and body painter, Shawna Del Real, to get some tips on how to create this look at home.
Step One: Del Real advises using a “stand up magnifying mirror so you can really see what you’re doing. Curl lashes with a lash curler to help false lashes blend in easier.”
Step Two: “Line your eyes with a thin black lines,” says Del Real, “using gel liner or a marker tip. This helps prevent gaps from showing.”
Step Three: Del Real removes lashes from the container using her index fingers, lightly breaking the seal.
Step Four: “Hold the strip up to your own lashes and measure,” she says. “Chances are they will be longer than the length of your own eye. With small cosmetic scissors, trim from the outside corner.”
Step Five: Take the tube of eyelash adhesive and draw a thin line across the strip, Use enough that you can see the glue, but no so much that it falls over the lash line when applied.
Step Six: “Now take a pair of round tip tweezers and pick up the lashes from the tip and apply directly to the outside corner of your lash line, trying to get as close to the line as possible. Work them down to the middle and then toward the inside eye corner.”
Step Seven: Del Real then advises to finish with “a coat of mascara while holding the back of the lashes with your index finger.”
