This is the month of the mother of all date nights. So why not start with amping up your abode’s romantic appeal? It turns out that spicing up your space can spice up your love life too. We asked author and feng shui expert Tess Whitehurst for some tips.
Soft, sensual textures. Whitehurst says that surrounding yourself with décor items that tactically appeal to the senses will entice your “playfully sexy self” to emerge. “A chenille or faux fur throw, a satin pillow, and/or a cozy area rug all speak to your sense of touch and will awaken your sensual awareness,” she says.
Light a fire. The flick of a light switch can ultimately make the difference between romantic and run-of-the-mill. “Soft, glowing lighting is so much more flattering,” advises Whitehurst. “Get rid of the fluorescents and replace them with things like recessed lights with dimmer switches, or even white twinkle lights strategically strewn in potted trees or craftily arranged in antique vases or jars.” Another can’t-miss strategy? Candlelight.
Choose the right colors. According to Whitehurst, colors like red, dark purple, deep orange, beige and brown will be sure to score you points on the seductive side. Whether via wall paint or décor choices, it’s important to incorporate these inviting tones into your bedroom and beyond. “Warm and earthy tones stimulate our emotional centers while getting us out of our heads and into our bodies,” she says. Translation: time for some maxing and relaxing with your loved one!
Make the bed before you lie in it. Nothing is more inviting than a freshly made and fluffed bed. Wash all linens, including bedspread and/or duvet cover, and spritz some yummy-smelling linen spray for an extra-special touch. Add a few decorative pillows and perhaps a cashmere throw, and your bed is sure to be as irresistible as you are.
