NYFW20 FW – Top 4 Trends We Love

New York Fashion Week took over the Empire State earlier this month, and fashionistas around the world are still buzzing about all the incredible collections and trends that debuted on the runways. Because we know you’re just as crazy about fashion as we are, we’ve put together a list of four of our favorite NYFW 2020 trends.

Carolina Herrera

Billowy Silhouettes

Lots of designers showcased looks that focused on volume — from big, diaphanous dresses to tops and skirts that brought major drama by using billowy shapes. It’s a fresh change from the sleek lines and tailored looks that dominated the runways last fall.

Anna Sui, available Anthropologie and Free People

Veils

We saw plenty of veils on the runways at this year’s New York Fashion Week. Rocking one on the street is a bold move, for sure, but we think the romance and whimsy it adds to any look is totally worth the risk and a great way to earn major style points.

Brandon Maxwell, available at Nordstrom

Bright Whites

Gone are the days when spring and summer were the only acceptable seasons to rock crisp white looks. This year’s New York Fashion Week proved that winter whites are here in a really big way (especially when you use them to go monochromatic), as evidenced by designers like Marc Jacobs, Brandon Maxwell, and Coach.

Michael Kors                                        Carolina Herrera

Capes

Several iconic names used capes to add serious flow to their looks, including Carolina Herrera and Michael Kors. From floor-length cuts to shorter — yet still sweeping — iterations, this is one trend that’s proven to flatter every body type and definitely one you can easily incorporate into your everyday fashion.

The 2020 Handbag Trends You Need to Know

By: Andrea Spanik

Posted: February 22, 2020

We love a good handbag. But what’s even better than just a good handbag? One that is on trend, of course! If you’re interested in keeping up with all the latest trends, read on to discover the biggest handbag trends forecasted for 2020.

1) Micro Bags
A small handbag is one thing, but for 2020, we take it a step further with the micro bag. And yes, when we say micro, we really mean micro. Think of basically only being able to carry around your cards, and that’s about it. Trust us, while this might seem difficult now, once you experience the freeing nature of simply carrying a micro bag, you’ll never want to go back.

2) Woven Bags
Woven bags have been quite popular for multiple seasons, and they don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. For spring, we suggest something that has a very “picnic basket’ feel, but for cooler months, opt for a woven leather.

3) Canvas + Leather
Classic, easy to pair with a variety of outfits, and right on-trend for 2020, you’ll get plenty of use out of your new leather and canvas bag. Go for something minimalist by seeking out the standard black and brown hues, or spice things up with a color. Either way, in 2020, you can’t go wrong with the mixture of leather and canvas.

4) Oversized Tote Bags
If you’re not so certain about the micro bag trend, you’ll be happy to know that just as trendy as the micro bag trend is the oversized tote bag trend. Ridiculously easy-to-wear and super convenient for carrying around all your essentials, we’ve got a feeling the oversized tote bag trend is one that many of you will be adopting this year.

5) Crocodile Texture
With animal print being such a major trend in past seasons, it probably doesn’t come as too much of a surprise that crocodile texture is making a major splash in handbags. Get your hands on any purse that is done in a crocodile texture, and you’ll be right on trend for 2020.

—

Tell us: Which of these 2020 handbag trends is your favorite? While each has their own benefits, pick the design that best suits your lifestyle, and you won’t have anything to worry about.

Exercise Essentials

So you set some fitness goals for 2020. We’re through January and into the second month of the year and you still haven’t started hitting the gym – or maybe you started but found it difficult to stick with your routine. Or maybe you’re a real go-getter and are crushing your goals but could use a little extra motivation to keep you on track. No matter which category you fall into, we have something to help keep you on track!

New workout clothes never fail to get me motivated! I usually opt for neutrals so I can easily mix and match any pieces, but bright colors are fun, too if that’s your thing!

Another tip to keep you on track: invest in some light dumbbells and an exercise mat so you can get a workout in from home! There are going to be days you don’t want to leave the comfort of your house, so it’s best to be prepared.

Last but not least, get a water bottle you will look forward to drinking from! This may sound odd to some, but trust me, if you invest in a nicer water bottle, you’ll be more likely to take it with you when you’re out and about and hit your water goal which is crucial to achieving your overall health and fitness goals!

Even if you haven’t made much progress on your goals for the year, there’s no better time to start than now! Pick out a few pieces of activewear you’ll look forward to wearing, get a few items to help you hit a home workout, and grab a fresh new water bottle and you’ll be on your way to your healthiest year yet!

Date Night Makeup Looks

By: Laura Leiva

Posted: January 9, 2019

Date night. A phrase that thrills us and unleashes butterflies of both anticipation and anxiety. We all want to make it look like we haven’t tried that hard without putting no effort in whatsoever. Walking that fine line can be tough, especially when it comes to your makeup. While a little too much eyeshadow certainly won’t ruin your date, it can make you feel less confident in your appearance and cast a dark cloud over the whole evening. Here are some date night makeup looks that find a happy balance between dressed up and “I look this way every day!”

Bold Lips, Muted Eyes
Everyone focuses on making their eyes pop, but what if you let your lips do all the talking? Instead of putting dark shadow and globs of mascara on, add a light layer to your eyes and focus on making your lips the center of attention. A few swipes of mascara and a skin-tone eyeshadow are all you need up top. Then, for your lips, pick a bold color (either bright or dark) that complements your skin tone. Finish off with a little lip liner, and your date will hang onto your every word – or at least, they’ll look like they are.

Classic Smokey Eye
Yeah yeah, everyone goes for the smokey eye look, but you know why? It’s simple! And it’s perfect for a night out. There are tons of tutorials all over the Internet with their own variations on the classic look, but these are the basics:

1.  Medium-tone shadow over the whole lid
2. Liner along lash line
3. Dark-tone shadow blended over half the lid on top of the liner
4. Finish with mascara

Bare Minimum
If you’re a fan of the natural look, you don’t have to get complicated! Pick a mid tone eyeshadow that complements your eye color, sweep it lightly over your lid, then add a touch of eyeliner or a little mascara (or both!). A little bit of setting powder and some chapstick or nude lipstick, and you’re good to go!

Makeup can help you feel more confident and attractive, but there’s nothing like knowing deep down that you’re fantastic and anyone would be lucky to have you. Go get ready for that date, don’t let the anxious jitters get to you, and remember that when it comes down to it, your best feature is you.

HOW TO LAYER FOR WINTER

By: Andrea Spanik

Posted: January 2, 2019

Keep toasty warm…

Just because temperatures have dipped doesn’t mean you need to be freezing. Having said that, though, chilly temperatures also don’t mean you need to resemble a snowman, piled in all the layers. Use these simple tips and tricks to help you balance layering, so you can stay toasty warm this winter season, while still looking great.

1. Long Sleeve Undershirts Will Save You

If there’s one layering tip that everyone should know it is this: long sleeve undershirts are a must in a winter wardrobe. They don’t need to be anything fancy. They simply need to keep you warm. Because, trust us, you might think that oversized turtleneck is enough to keep you warm, but when you don’t have any fabric tight around you, cold air will inevitably blow against your bare skin. Invest in some undershirts that will sit tightly against your skin, and you’ll likely be much more comfortable this winter.

2. Never forget your hat, mitten and gloves

When you’re out and about, it’s easy enough to think that your winter coat will keep you warm, but with winter weather, wind chills can change in an instant, and we’ve got a feeling you’re not going to want to be without proper outerwear. A simple headband doesn’t take up much space in your purse, some basic mittens can easily be tucked in your coat pocket, and a stylish scarf is never a bad idea, no matter what the temperature. You can always take these pieces off if you don’t need them, but if you don’t bring them at all, when temperatures dip or the sun goes down, you’ll be sad without them.

3. Cardigans are your best friends

If there’s one fashion piece that is ideally suited for the winter months, it’s the cardigan. Cardigans tend to not be as bulky as a lot of sweaters, which makes them great for those times you find yourself in an overly heated environment. You can simply remove your cardigan in the same way you might remove a coat. So easy, and so convenient for layering.

4. Always over-prepare

When it comes to layering for winter, it’s always best to be over-prepared by layering extensively. Remember: you can always remove layers if you get too hot, but you can’t add layers that you don’t have. if you have enough room, we always suggest layering a thin pair of leggings under your jeans. This will make a huge difference in your warmth. It might seem simple, but it really is something that we strongly consider when you’re headed out for the day.

So which of these layering tricks will you be utilizing this winter? Implement all of them when getting dressed in the morning, and we’ve got a feeling you’ll be perfectly warm and cozy this winter season.

THE BEST COLD WEATHER ACCESSORIES FOR KIDS

By: Laura Leiva

Posted: December 31, 2018

Warm and cozy styles…

As the cool weather settles in, are you looking to ensure your children are cozy, warm, and stylish? As a good parent, we know you are, and that’s why we want to share with you all the best cold weather accessories for kids. Get your hands on these top cold weather accessories, and you’ll be earning all the good parent points in no time.

Knitted Hats, Gloves, and Scarves

When it comes to children and outerwear, the first priority should always be about function. While style is something that we always consider, with children, first and foremost, we want to pick accessories that will keep the little one warm. After that, we look at style, which is why knit outerwear is one of our favourite staple outerwear pieces.

Knitted outwear is almost guaranteed to be warm, while also being stylish. Go for a hat with a cute pom-pom on the top, or get a knitted pair of gloves with bows for your little girl. And oh, your child’s outerwear collection isn’t complete without a knitted scarf. No doubt about it: you can’t go wrong with knitted outwear for children.

Waterproof Outerwear

Having said that, while we love knitted outwear for warmth and style, if you really want to consider function, we highly recommend picking up your child some waterproof outerwear, especially if you live in an area where snow is common. Waterproof outerwear will ensure that when your little one is out playing in the snow, they’ll stay warm and dry. In fact, picking up a full snowsuit is never a bad idea when you have snow on the horizon.

Cozy Boot Socks

If you live in a particularly cold climate, we highly recommend investing in a good pair of boot socks. While you’ll of course want to ensure you’ve picked up a pair of highly insulated boots, boot socks add an extra layer of protection. Not to mention, if you get a pair that’s extra long, they’ll be able to peek out from the top of the boot, which adds a little style edge.

Trendy Accessories

Speaking of style edge… If you’re someone who wants to ensure their child is the best dressed kid on the playground, we wanted to provide you with some outerwear trends that are guaranteed to give your kid all the style points. Give some of these outerwear trends a try on your little one: 1) plaid coats are all the rage for winter style. In particular, red and black buffalo checks are really making a splash, 2) we love anything knitted with a vintage feel about it, especially on a little one, 3) in terms of color, vibrant red is one of the top color trends of the season, 4) and lastly, to really bring all the style to the table, add some faux fur into your child’s look. Not only is this ultra trendy, it’s also ultra warm. The best of both worlds, right?

Remember, when it comes to cold weather accessories, it’s all about nailing function first, and then style. Do that, and we’ve got a feeling you’ll have one very warm (stylish!) kid this winter.

How to Find Your Style

Posted: December 28, 2018

“Vice”…

We all want to be one of those women. You know which ones. They exude style and confidence, and always look 100% themselves. Their outfits aren’t carbon copies of any other look you’ve seen, and it’s as if their clothes were tailor made for them (hint: they probably were).

But here’s the thing: in order to be like one of those women, you can’t be like one of those women. You can’t try to emulate them, because the way they look so put together is by being true to their unique, inner style. In order to be able to do the same, you need to figure out what you’re style is. Here’s how to do it:

Figure Out What Your Style Isn’t
The best way to find out what you like is to determine what you don’t. Are there any particular pieces of clothing you don’t like? Are there colors you know don’t match your skin tone? What about trends that you just can’t get on board with? Think about what you don’t like and why, and this will help point you in the direction of what you do want to wear.

Think About How You Want to Feel
Clothes are directly tied into the image we present both to ourselves and the outside world. This image translates into how we feel about ourselves. Think about how you want to feel in the clothes you wear. Do you want to feel like a powerful business woman? What about a straight A student? Are you more of a soccer mom, or a rocker chick? Take some time, close your eyes, and imagine the feeling you want to have. Then find the clothes that match that feeling.

Look at Designers That Match Your Personality
After you’ve identified how you want to feel, you’ll have a better idea of the clothes that suit you. Take a look at some designer brands to see if you can pinpoint which ones seem to match that feeling. You don’t have to buy anything designer, of course, but fashion starts on the runway and you’ll likely find similar pieces for a lot cheaper at department stores. Many designers have their own iconic look, so see if you can find one that speaks your style language.

Allow Yourself to be Flexible
Fashion should always be flexible. Don’t tie yourself down to one type of style if you feel drawn to multiple. Maybe one day you want to look like a CEO, and the next you’re feeling more boho-chic. That’s totally fine! Style is all about you as an individual, and as an individual your likes and dislikes are fluid. Allow your wardrobe to be fluid, too.

Style is very personal, and to figure out yours, you have to figure out about yourself first and foremost. So rather than copying the runway looks, get out there and see if you can find the clothes that were made for you! Who knows, you might just learn something about yourself along the way.

HOW TO WEAR A SCARF FOUR DIFFERENT WAYS

By: Sara Antonuccio

Posted: December 26, 2018

Tie it, wrap it, drape it…

Besides shoes and jackets, what does every woman have a million of? Scarves! And while it’s easy to wear a scarf – toss it on over any outfit and you’re good to go – it’s always nice to mix things up. Try one of these four ways to style your scarf this season:

1. Wrapped around your neck, tucked into a trench coat – Put together the two staples of the season, the scarf and the trench. It’ll keep your neck warm and make you look good, too!

2. As a cardigan – Start with something large like a blanket scarf, drape it over your shoulders, and add a belt. Voila! Instant outfit.

3. Around your head – Head scarves are very popular! You can make it work with nearly any size scarf, but it’s easier to use something small. Fold it up and tie it like a headband, or go full turban. The possibilities are endless!

4. As a shawl or wrap – Shawls aren’t just for a certain age group. If you need something to throw over a dress, can’t find a coat, or just want something to wear around the house, wraps are a classy choice. This works best with blanket scarves, but even short and light scarves have their place.

Every scarf brings a new look! Mix patterns, match colors, and have fun! There’s no end to what you can create with a closet full of elegant accessories.

“Marry Poppins Returns”; “Aquaman”; “Bumblebee”; “Second Act”; “Welcome to Marwen”…

Mary Poppins Returns

Now an adult with three children, bank teller Michael Banks learns that his house will be repossessed in five days unless he can pay back a loan. His only hope is to find a missing certificate that shows proof of valuable shares that his father left him years earlier. Just as all seems lost, Michael and his sister receive the surprise of a lifetime when Mary Poppins — the beloved nanny from their childhood — arrives to save the day and take the Banks family on a magical, fun-filled adventure.

PG. Fantasy/Adventure. Directed by Rob Marshall. 2h 12m.

What the Internet Says

“Against all the odds, this is a very worthy follow-up to the original movie. Blunt is pitch-perfect, as ever, in a film that all but insists you leave with a smile slapped on your face.” – Empire

“Blunt is flawless as a woman described as perfect in every way. Whenever she’s sweeping her magical way through, above and even below London, the movie is the jolly, jolly holiday it wants to be.” – People

Our Take: Get ready for a whimsical and magical trip down memory lane! This long-awaited sequel is nostalgic and sincere to the original; Mary Poppins Returns is the perfect film for the whole family to enjoy this holiday weekend.

Aquaman

Once home to the most advanced civilization on Earth, the city of Atlantis is now an underwater kingdom ruled by the power-hungry King Orm. With a vast army at his disposal, Orm plans to conquer the remaining oceanic people — and then the surface world. Standing in his way is Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Orm’s half-human, half-Atlantean brother and true heir to the throne. With help from royal counselor Vulko, Aquaman must retrieve the legendary Trident of Atlan and embrace his destiny as protector of the deep.

PG-13. Fantasy/ Science Fiction. Directed by James Wan. 2h 22m.

What the Internet Says

“‘Aquaman’, under the guidance of a smart director in James Wan, delivers the goods expected by fans of the comic book creation and is fortunate to have the light touch Momoa brings to a role that easily could have been waterlogged in other hands.” – Deadline

Our Take: DC Comic fans this one is for you! Aquaman makes his big screen debut – we’ll be there (with popcorn).

Watch the trailer here.

Bumblebee

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee the Autobot seeks refuge in a junkyard in a small California beach town. Charlie, on the brink of turning 18 years old and trying to find her place in the world, soon discovers the battle-scarred and broken Bumblebee. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns that this is no ordinary yellow Volkswagen.

PG-13. Action. Directed by Travis Knight. 1h 53m.

What the Internet Says

“An impassioned ode to both the toys and their era, this, at last, is the Transformers movie we’ve been waiting for.” – Empire

“‘Bumblebee’ is basically the movie that fans of the 1980s animated series wanted all along.” – Variety

Our Take: We couldn’t be more excited for the latest installment in the Transformers series – we think this may be the best one yet! Gownups and teens alike will surely enjoy this film.

Second Act

Value Shop assistant manager Maya Vargas (Jennifer Lopez) wants only one thing for her 43rd birthday — a promotion. While her résumé may not scream upper management, her track record certainly does. Vargas is an innovator who listens to her customers and delivers results. When she loses the job to a college-educated candidate, Maya sets out to prove to Madison Avenue that street smarts are as valuable as book smarts — and it’s never too late for a second act.

PG-13. Romance/Comedy. Directed by Peter Segal. 1h 45m.

What the Internet Says

“‘Second Act’ has a meta whiff of revival, centering a prolific renaissance woman in the medium that first made her famous. It’s nice to have her back.” – Vanity Fair

“You know you’re watching a connect-the-dots comedy, but the dots sparkle. And Lopez gives her first star performance in a while.” – Variety

Our Take: J.Lo has already won us over. Plus an easy-to-watch rom-com, seems like the ideal flick to see this  weekend.

Welcome to Marwen

When a devastating attack shatters Mark Hogancamp (Steve Carell) and wipes away all memories, no one expected recovery. Putting together pieces from his old and new life, Mark meticulously creates a wondrous town where he can heal and be heroic. As he builds an astonishing art installation—a testament to the most powerful women he knows—through his fantasy world, he draws strength to triumph in the real one. In a bold, wondrous and timely film, Welcome to Marwen shows that when your only weapon is your imagination…you’ll find courage in the most unexpected place.

PG-13. Drama. Directed by Robert Zemeckis. 1h 56m.

What the Internet Says

“A genuine oddity, Welcome To Marwen may not hit the emotional highs but mixes high-concept fun with a sincere attempt to describe trauma in an original visceral way. And Zemeckis’ filmmaking remains exemplary.” – Empire Online

Our Take: Regardless, this emotional true story is genuinely moving. Steve Carell does an exceptional job playing Mark Hogancamp and the telling of his story.
