This week at the movies: A Dog’s Purpose and Gold.

A Dog’s Purpose

A devoted dog (Josh Gad) discovers the meaning of its own existence through the lives of the humans it teaches to laugh and love. Reincarnated as multiple canines over the course of five decades, the lovable pooch develops an unbreakable bond with a kindred spirit named Ethan (Bryce Gheisar). As the boy grows older and comes to a crossroad, the dog once again comes back into his life to remind him of his true self. Also starring Dennis Quaid and Peggy Lipton.

Rated PG. Family/Drama. Directed by Lasse Halström. 2 h.

What the Critics Say:

“Hallström (Chocolat, The Cider House Rules) seems to have taken care to make sure A Dog's Purpose, based on W. Bruce Cameron's novel, isn't too harrowing for the tenderhearted… [T]here's also evidence of canine joy in A Dog's Purpose, in the form of movie-star mutts chasing their tails and fetching semideflated footballs. That part looks like fun – and when fun is involved, a dog's face doesn't lie.” – Time

Our Take: Dog lovers: rejoice. Just don’t forget to bring the tissues; this one is definitely a tearjerker, but still delightful…

Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey), a prospector desperate for a lucky break, teams up with a similarly eager geologist and sets off on an amazing journey to find gold in the uncharted jungle of Indonesia. Getting the gold was hard but keeping it is even more difficult, sparking an adventure through the most powerful boardrooms of Wall Street. Also starring Bryce Dallas Howard.

Rated R. Drama/Thriller. Directed by Stephen Gaghan. 2h 1m.

What the Critics Say:

“Sporting a pot belly, snaggled teeth, and receding combover (though any normal person with either would go out of his way to hide them), McConaughey turns in a gonzo performance as a gold prospector.” – Variety

Our Take: We’re intrigued to see Southern stud Matthew McConaughey transform into such a scruffy and scrappy character in this rags-to-riches adventure; he might just strike gold…
